Pet Peeves

I'm only going to cover a few pet peeves of mine.

Pop or Soda?

First, since I was born and raised in the north, I said "pop" instead of "soda."  When I say "pop" around someone who says "soda," they tend to say something along the lines of, "Pop?  It's soda."  It's the same thing!  There's this phenomenon in every language called synonyms, which is a word or phrase that means exactly or near the same as another word or phrase.  There's no right or wrong way to call a soft drink.  Neither one is superior to the other.  Anyone who says one way is better than the other and won't drop it has a serious superiority complex.  The way you were brought up to say "soda" is not superior to my upbringing of saying "pop," and neither is my upbringing superior to those who were brought up to say "soda."  Honestly, who cares how someone calls a soft drink?  It doesn't matter.

Apple or Windows?

This one really makes me mad.  I'm a loyal Apple user, and I'm not like most Apple users where I'm completely biased about using Apple products.  I grew up using Windows software and products and with every one I used, they always failed me miserably in short amounts of time.  So when I got my first Apple computer and it didn't fail on me until many years later (no computer is perfect and will last forever), I decided to stay with Apple because from my experience they're more reliable than Windows products are.  However, I'm smart enough to realise the advantages and disadvantages of owning either Apple or Windows products.  If you're a gamer and want to game on the computer a lot, Apple is not the way to go.  However, from my experience, Windows is very prone to viruses whereas Apple is not.  Apple products are expensive for a reason.  The best of technology tends to be expensive.  If you can't deal with that, complaining about it isn't going to solve anything.

This section about Apple or Windows is not for me to try and convince anyone that Apple is better than Windows.  They both have their pros and cons, and I'm perfectly happy with Apple.  I'm a gamer, but not a PC gamer.  Everything that I use my Apple products for work perfectly for me in ways that Windows cannot.  That's what my pet peeve is:  people trying to convince me that Windows is far superior to Apple.  Sure, in some ways it may be, especially if you're a PC gamer.  And in some ways Apple is greater than Windows.  But is either one superior to the other indefinitely?  No.  People who are biased about Windows, their first argument is almost always that Apple products are too expensive.  If you're a serious Windows user, you would spend the same amount of money as you would on an Apple to 1) get a good, reliable computer (e.g. Alienware), 2) purchase good, reliable virus protection software (which comes with Apple products and automatically updates on its own with each software update, and hence added to the price), and 3) whatever appliances you wish to spice up your personal computer.  Windows users spend just as much money as you would on an Apple computer.  The only difference is, all the properties of an Apple computer come all in one (minus appliances) and with Windows computers you usually have to work at it through time.  So with Windows, you spend a couple thousand dollars on it throughout time whereas with Apple you drop a couple thousand dollars right there on the spot.  That's what they concentrate on.  If you can't afford an Apple computer, that doesn't mean Windows are automatically superior; it also doesn't mean that you're incapable of saving up money.

Anyway, I'm a proud, loyal Apple user for legitimate reasons.  For me, Apple is more reliable than Windows, and I'm speaking purely from experience.  You can comment on this blog as much as you like about how dumb Apple products are.  You'll just be wasting your time.  My point is not that Apple is better than Windows.  My point is that Apple is better for me than Windows.  I don't trust Windows products, and I have every reason to trust Apple.

Rap, Country, & Pop Music

I'm very picky when it comes to music.  I love listening to classical, jazz, Christian worship and rock, alternative rock, classic rock, and some hard rock here and there.  However, I cannot stand rap, country, or pop music.  When people find out that I don't like either of those genres, they act appalled and try to convince me of its greatness.  It's fine that you like rap, or country, or pop, but I find them all appalling.  I'm not going to sit here and try and convince you all that rap, country, and pop are stupid and shouldn't exist.  Sure, I believe they're all stupid, but trying to convince otherwise to people who like them would just be a waste of time.

What bothers me is when people become so appalled that I don't like the same music as they do.  What makes them expect that I would like the same music they do?  Just because I know you doesn't mean we'll have the same music interests.  Or just because of the modern age we live in doesn't mean I give in to the media's influence on the music industry.  Anyone who knows me really well knows that I don't like things that are popular.  Rap, country, and pop music are very popular styles of music, and it's not only its epidemic popularity that appalls me, but the music style as well.  Rap is just poor poetry and repulsive, the nasally sound of country music is extremely annoying and makes me want to kill myself, and pop is just a lack of talent.  I like my styles of music, and you like yours.  Don't try to convince me that rap, country, or pop is good music and that I should like it.  No one has been successful at convincing me that either of those are good in 24 years, so you won't succeed at it either.

Many of you may disagree with me on this topic and the others above, but just like the title of this blog, this is all Food For Thought.
